빈집 활용을 위한 새로운 규칙: 디서플린(Discipline)
도심 속에 방치된 빈집들을 어떻게 활용할 것인가? 본 프로젝트는 빈집 활용에 있어 필수적인 건축 요소들을 재구성하여, 열악한 환경에서도 최적화된 건축적 개입이 가능한 장치, '디서플린(Discipline)'을 제안한다.
디서플린은 대지의 상황과 스팬(Span)에 따라 유연하게 대응하는 구조적 기둥(Structural Column)과, 개별 공간의 설비와 동선을 입체적으로 엮어내는 프로그램 기둥(Program Column)으로 구성된다. 이 두 기둥은 보이드와 솔리드, 구조와 기능의 대구를 이루며 공간 생산의 새로운 규칙을 제시한다. 화장실, 계단, 설비 배관 등 필수 요소를 이 기둥들에 집약시킴으로써, 현장 시공의 부담을 줄이고 경제성과 시공성을 동시에 확보하는 공간 구축 전략이다.

대상지인 포항 북부시장은 한국전쟁 직후 형성되어, 해외 원조 물품을 거래하던 시장과 상인들의 주거가 결합된 상가주택 단지다. 좁은 필지에 다닥다닥 붙은 이 집들은 소위 '집장사'와 목수들에 의해 지어졌으며, 하나의 벽을 공유하거나 증개축을 거듭하며 복잡한 시공간의 켜를 형성하고 있다.
그러나 도시의 변화와 함께 시장의 기능은 쇠퇴하고, 합의된 도시 계획 원칙과 사유지의 실용적 활용 사이에는 갈등이 존재한다. 건축 한계선은 지켜지지 않고, 보행로는 끊겨 있으며, 과거의 활력은 사라져가고 있다. 우리는 이곳에서 단순히 낡은 건물을 고치는 것을 넘어, '시장'이라는 기능이 사라진 후에도 이 장소가 가질 수 있는 도시적 가치를 고민했다.

평면적 얕음을 극복하는 '깊이(Depth)'의 구축
이곳의 상가주택들은 태생적으로 얕은 평면적 깊이를 가지고 있다. 우리는 이를 해소하기 위해 두 개의 주택 필지를 통합하고, '선형적 동선'을 통해 새로운 공간적 깊이를 부여했다.
외부에서 내부로 진입할수록 공간은 점차 내향적인 성격을 띠게 된다. 저층부에는 도시와 소통하는 외향적 유닛을, 중앙부에는 빛과 바람을 들이는 중정(Courtyard)을, 그리고 가장 깊은 곳에는 사적인 주거 공간을 배치했다. 기존의 방으로 나뉜 폐쇄적인 구조를 허물고, 긴 동선을 따라 공간이 연속적으로 이어지도록 하여 한정된 면적 내에서도 풍부한 공간감을 느낄 수 있도록 계획했다.

물성과 추상: 목조와 콘크리트의 이원적 전략
리노베이션 과정에서 우리는 기존의 목조 구조체 위에 육중한 콘크리트 요소를 덧입히는 이원적 전략을 취했다. 이는 과거의 흔적(목조)과 현대적 개입(콘크리트)을 대비시켜 물성과 추상성을 동시에 획득하려는 시도다.
오래된 목조 구조는 구조적으로 불필요해진 부분이라 할지라도 '남겨진' 요소로서 공간에 시간성을 부여한다. 반면, 새롭게 삽입된 콘크리트 벽체와 최소화된 개구부는 시간의 흐름을 정지시키는 듯한 추상적인 배경이 된다. 이 두 가지 이질적인 재료가 만나는 지점에서, 건물은 단순한 물리적 실체를 넘어 시간과 계절의 변화를 담아내는 그릇이 된다. 우리는 이것을 주입된 '지속가능성'이 아닌, 건물이 시간과 함께 늙어가며 삶을 담아내는 진정한 의미의 '건축적 깊이'라고 정의한다.

Discipline: A New Rule for Space Production
This project proposes 'Discipline,' an architectural device optimized for regenerating empty houses in urban areas. It consists of 'Structural Columns' that adapt to site conditions and 'Program Columns' that integrate utilities and circulation. This system reduces construction burdens in poor environments and offers a new strategy for spatial branding.
Context: Historical Layers of Bukbu Market
Bukbu Market in Pohang, formed after the Korean War, is a dense cluster of shop-houses built by local carpenters. As the market function declines, we question the validity of this typology. The project aims to uncover the urban value of this place beyond its original commercial purpose, navigating the conflict between public guidelines and private usage.
Constructing 'Depth'
To overcome the inherent shallowness of the existing lots, we merged two plots and established a linear circulation to create 'Architectural Depth.' The space transitions from extroverted units at the street level to introverted private spaces deep inside, mediated by a central courtyard. This sequence replaces the old compartmentalized room structure with a continuous flow.
Materiality and Time
We adopted a dual strategy of overlaying heavy concrete elements onto the existing wooden structure. The contrast between the old wood (traces of time) and the new concrete (abstraction) captures the passage of time. This approach moves beyond superficial sustainability to create a backdrop where the building ages gracefully, embodying the true depth of architecture.
